The Courteeners started singing at the local club Eyewitness. The drummer first found his love of music by listening to his uncle's music collection. The bassist was encouraged to play by his music teacher. The members of The Courteeners met in grade school. The band used to sell their records out of their car on campus.
The Courteeners's most current project is the band's first record since the band broke up eight years ago. The group is in the midst of the promotional tour for their newest album. The Courteeners will spend some time apart after this next tour, allowing the group members to pursue individual projects.
Generally, critics praise The Courteeners for their ability to rile up the audience during concerts. Cleveland music critic Kevin Van Gundy has always been impressed with group’s effort every show. The Courteenerswere tentative after releasing their debut album, but were more than relieved when they started hearing their music on the radio. The groupplayed anywhere that would have them in the beginning.
The Courteeners finally realized they made it after the band’s first fan club was started by Rebecca Reiner in 1978. After playing from New York to California, the band’s fan club exploded from the handful of fans around Boston to thousands in every city throughout the country.
Shelbyville has always been receptive to the band, even when they were small time, so the band schedules a show there every year, even if they are not touring.
