The Eagles: Background
The Eagles went from session musicians to guaranteed number one artists to bickering former band members. They have run the gamut of lives for rock stars and came out together again decades later.
The Eagles formed in 1971 after serving as the backup band for Linda Ronstadt. Then Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner, and Don Henley, the group released it self-titled debut in 1972. With three hit singles (“Take It Easy”, “Witchy Woman”, and “Peaceful Easy Feeling”), the band went platinum by popularizing a Southern California country rock sound.
The Eagles began to move away from their start as the writing team of Don Henley and Glenn Fry began to develop and show a talent for writing conceptual lyrical songs. Thr third album, On the Border, gave the group its first number one single, “Best of My Love”. The Eagles followed their triple platinum album with three number one albums, One of These Nights, Hotel California, and The Long Run.
The records all went multi-platinum, but the band had lost Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner in the process. They were replaced Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, but the turmoil within the band came to the stage o July 31, 1980. Between songs the members exchanged insults and threats. The end had come, and after the Eagles released the requisite live album for Warner Bros, they split.
An induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame brought them back together again in 1998. Several reunion tours followed, but time had not healed all the wounds and Don Felder was fired from the group and sued the remaining members of the band. Despite the fighting, the Henley, Frey, Walsh, and Schmit still tour to this day.
The latest tour was launched in March 2008 and celebrated the Eagles’ first release of new material since 1979. Long Run Out of Eden appears is not only the most recent release, but also the probably the last from the group.
