The members of U92 Summer Jam met in 1989. The drummer used to fall asleep with a cassette tapeplaying as a teenager. U92 Summer Jam began performing at Colleague, a local club. Jerry Lee Lewis heavily influenced the early work of the band.

U92 Summer Jam’s first album was a dud, but the second finally got some attention. The band plays plenty of arenas, but would rather perform in the smaller bars in which they began. U92 Summer Jam met with a local DJ from B89.9 and convinced him to play their single on air. The single immediately became a local hit and larger radio stations started playing the song. Eventually a record executive heard it and signed the band. The band played for years atsmall clubs making almost no money.
