Umass Spring Concert began playing together while they were in grade school. The group used to sell their tapes out of their car at local shows. Umass Spring Concert started playing at Icon, a local club. The lead singer was influenced by his father's love of music.

Umass Spring Concert realized that they were truly working musicians after Pam Jean started the first fan club for the group in 1986. Starting out with just a few dozen members in Cleveland, the fan club quickly grew with band’s national tour and the launching of the group’s website by Rebecca Van Gundy.
