Umbrella Sequence started singing at Anyplace, a local dive bar. The bassist wanted to start a group since he was in middle school. The lead singer was heavily influenced by his uncle's love for music. The members of Umbrella Sequence met in 1993. The group used to practice at the guitarist's house.

Umbrella Sequence was discovered after single was played on X99.1. Umbrella Sequence signed the record deal, but were not expecting the next step to be any easier.

Umbrella Sequence knew that they were truly working musicians when the band’s first fan club was started in 1997 by Cynthia Cochrane. The fan club received a huge boost after Anna Kostner designed a website for the group. That coupled with the tour across the country saw the fan club’s official membership reach numbers in the thousands.

Umbrella Sequence's newest record has been heavily influenced by singers of the '60s. The group just completed their new record, but they are already thinking of their next move. Umbrella Sequence intends to take some time off after this next tour, allowing the group members to pursue other projects.
