Van Zant started playing at Human, a college dive bar. The group used to sell their tapes out of their truck at local shows. The members of Van Zant met in 1986. The drummer was influenced by his sibling's love of music.

submitted their single to X100.1 and a DJ took a liking to it. The members of the group all quit their other jobs to focus on their music.

Van Zant finally knew they made it as soon as the group’s first fan club was started by Debra Gremillion in 1991. After the band’s first North American tour, the fan club grew from the couple dozen fans who heard the band play around Detroit to the thousands who heard them play from California to New York.

The new project from Van Zant has taken the group in a new direction, with a bigger sound. The band may have recently finished their most current record, but they are planning the next release already.

Biloxi has always been receptive to the band, even when they were small time, so the group schedules a show there every year, even if they are not touring. Van Zant realizes that most fans like their past songs, so they use material from past records and the latest album.
