Vast Basement started singing at the local club Warning. The bassist was encouraged to play by his father. The lead singer was encouraged to play by his music teacher. The members of Vast Basement met in middle school. Jazz heavily influenced the early work of the group.

Vast Basement was discovered while performing at at Bandit, a local dive bar. The band plays plenty of arenas, but would rather play in the smaller venues in which they started.

Vast Basement knew they made it in 1990, as soon as the group's first fan club was started by Patricia Dunn. The fan club received a huge boost after Kathleen Fraiser designed a website for the group. That coupled with the tour across the country saw the fan club’s official membership reach numbers in the thousands.

Vast Basement's members hope to team up with other artists while they are on tour. The group is in the midst of the tour accompanying for their most current album.

The group has always had a good time in Champaign so they make sure to play there every year, even if they are not promoting anything.
