Yeasayer started performing at the college dive bar Demonstrator. The guitarist first found his love of music by listening to his dad's record collection. The bassist use to listen to record constantly as a teenager. Yeasayer’s members grew up together. The band used to sell their tapes out of their van on the street.

Yeasayer were convinced their hard work had paid off after their first single rose to the top of the charts. The group's members all had weird jobs while they waited to be noticed.
