The members of Yomo met in middle school. The bassist used to listen to his father's music constantly as a kid. The drummer used to annoy his family by playing his favorite CD too loud. Yomo started singing at the local dive bar Celebrity. The group harassed the local radio station to play their first release.

Yomo’s first release climbed the charts quickly, giving them national exposure. The group's members all had weird jobs while they waited to be noticed.

Yomo realized that their dream of making an actual life for themselves as musicians had come true as soon as the band’s first fan club was started in 1999 by Nancy Phillippe. After starting out with a handful of members in Atlanta, the club took off exponentially, growing to over two thousand in just a few months.
