Buick Open Tickets
From 1958 until 2009, the Buick Open was held in June at the Warwich Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan and sponsored by Buick Motors. With the recent problems with the motor company, they are pulling sponsorship of the tournament and it will be called the Greenbrier Classic held at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
During the first ten years of the Buick Open, tickets sold for the Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Michigan. After 1969, the pro golf events in the area seemed to nosedive and what could be found were pro-ams and other unofficial events. In 1977, the Buick Open returned at the Flint Elks Club then moved to its most current home in 1978.
The 17th hole on the Warwick is known for its rowdy galleries. This is a par 3 hole and many fans use this opportunity to heckle and chant to the players of the Buick Open. It has become a popular place to gather and one of the funnest places to watch the tournament. Also to locals, the 17th hole is most commonly known as the second largest outdoor cocktail party in the world. As reserved as golf usually is and as serious as the players take their game, they enjoy the entertainment from the crowd at the 17th hole. John Daley was quoted as saying, “This is a great tournament to play in, it's a beer drinkers tournament.”
Recently, long hitters have dominated the Buick Open. Tickets to watch players such as Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Kenny Perry are highly sought after. These names along with Brian Bateman have combined to win seven in the last eight tournaments. There are many other players who rank high on driving distances in this tournament and have placed second. These players include Jason Gore, Bubba Watson and John Daley.
It is unfortunate what our economy has done to this tournament, but the Buick Open will be in good hands when it moves to West Virginia.
The A.P. Reported in July of 2009 that G.M. Would pull their sponsorship of the Buick Open in order to regain focus on their business. The economy has hard hit the auto industry and this is one casualty. Luckily for Buick Open fans, the tournament will still exist, just under a new name and in a new local. The tournament will now be held in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia at The Greenbrier and will be called The Greenbrier Classic. Tickets will be available for the July 29-August 1 tournament.
