Frys Open

Frys Open Tickets

The Frys.com Open is a tournament, which is part of the PGA's fall tour series. It's also a recent addition to the PGA and was first played in 2007 as the Fry's Electronics Open at Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course in Scottsale, Arizona. The purse was worth 5 million US dollars.

The inaugural competition was won by Canadian Mike Weir by one stroke over Mark Hensby. In 2008 the tournament was won by Cameron Beckman on the second playoff hole when he went for par and Kevin Sutherland bogeyed.

As mentioned above, The Frys.com Open is an official PGA Tour event and is part of its fall series. This year's upcoming event will feature a full-field of 132 players and will have a total purse of $5 million, with $900,000 going to the winner.

The competition is held at Grayhawk Golf club, which is located between Pima and Hayden roads on Thompson Peak Parkway in North Scottsdale. From the Loop 101 North, take the Pima Road exit and head north on Pima for 2 miles. Turn left (west) on Thompson Peak Parkway and continue for approximately 400 yards. Grayhawk Golf Club is on the right. From the Loop 101 East, take the Hayden Road exit and go North. Turn right (east) on Thompson Peak Park.

Grayhawk Golf Club is constructed on a flat desert landscape and includes a natural creek that has created 15-20 canyons throughout the layout of the course. The creek empties into a man-made lake between holes 10 and 18. The mountains create a beautiful backdrop for the scenic par-3 No. 8, which is known as "Aces and Eights" because of its reputation for being either a hit or miss hole. Golf course superintendent Ernie Pock is a second-generation superintendent at Grayhawk, having taken the reins from his father who was the construction superintendent for the golf course and the first golf course superintendent in 2000.

The par-4 498-yard seventh hole is considered to be the course's most difficult hole. The desert pinches in on the landing area, however, golfers who either play it cautiously or simply bomb it over the trouble area will have a long iron into a very receptive green. Laying up on both the tee shot and second shot takes away much of the risk, but the approach must be on the correct tier of the green for any shot at birdie.

The par-4 332-yard 15th hole is thought to be the easiest hole on the course. On this hole, golfer's have the options of playing either conservative or aggressive. The green lies downhill from the tee and if the player opts to really let loose and let the ball fly, it will result in a short pitch, green-side bunker shot or possibly a putt for eagle. A long-iron tee shot results in a wedge to the well protected green which has two distinctive levels.

There is a charity component to the event as well, with proceeds from the 2009 Frys.com Open being donated to The Thunderbirds and Thunderbirds Charities. Additional proceeds from the tournament will benefit the American Institute of Mathematics, the Fore Adoption Foundation, a select number of foundations, and a select number of additional charities in the Valley.

If you want to know what times your favorite players will be teeing off, you can check the daily newspaper sports sections or on the web for the daily pairings. Thursday and Friday pairings are decided before the tournament starts, with each golfer playing one day in the morning and the other day in the afternoon. Saturday and Sunday pairings are based on a player's score, with the leaders teeing off last. Free daily pairing sheets will also be available at the tournament.
