The Memorial Tournament is one of the PGA’s tour golf tournament and is closely associated with the famous Jack Nicklaus and is played at the Murifield Village Golf Club located in Dublin, Ohio. The course was designed by Nicklaus and the Golf Club where the Memorial Tournament is held is in Nicklaus’ hometown. The golf course runs though a neighborhood named Muirfield village. In this area there is also a statue of Jack Nicklaus teaching kids how to play golf in the Muirfield Drive.

Now this is a restricted field event on the PGA tour calendar where only 75 players who were on the money list are guaranteed to be invited. Another one of the biggest features of the memorial tournament is the induction ceremony that honors many past golfers. There is a plaque for each golfer which is honored and is installed near the clubhouse in Muirfiled. In 2000 Jack Nicklaus was the honoree himself.

Nicklaus was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, where he learned the game of golf and raised his kids. One of Nicklaus’s dreams was to create a golf club that encompassed both his professional and personal life as well as to create a tournament that would represent his burning passion for the great game of golf. He also wanted to give back to his community that had embraced him as well as the game of golf so whole heartedly. His dream became reality in May 1976, when he first played the Memorial tournament. This opportunity came to him after two years to the day when the doors were opened to the first shots which were played at the Muirfiled Village.

In 1966 during the Masters Week Nicklaus showed his intent on hosting his very own tournament and spoke of what he desired most i.e. to create a tournament that would be like the Masters. He wanted the tournament to have a global interest and to be inspired by golfing history and tradition. His aim was to form a tournament that would give back to charitable organizations that would benefit both adults and children in the Columbus and Ohio areas. The biggest and main beneficiary of the tournament would be the nationwide children’s hospital.

The Memorial Tournament is famous for being one of those tournaments which are at the mercy of Ohio’s rather unpredictable weather that becomes even more unpredictable during springtime. Every year the state sees its share of bad weather that threats to derail the game which results in delays during the event. During the Memorial Tournament of 1977 there was a forced postponement of the final round due to the bad weather. Later in 1990 the tournament had to be cancelled early because the course was waterlogged. Then there was a big delay in 1997 because of rather bad weather that threatened and did ruin much of The Memorial Tournament.

The Memorial Tournament is always escaping rain which seems to be there almost every time that it’s played. However people still enjoy the great tournament as they come over from all over the world.
