Travelers Championship Tickets
The Travelers Championship is actually a PGA golf tour tournament. The Travelers Championship is the second in terms of being the most attended PGA tour event every year right behind the famous FBR Open. The Travelers championship has been played every year at the Cromwell Connecticut ever since 1984 and later since 1991 the tournament has been widely held at the TPC River Highlands course.
The position of this has greatly varied on the calendar first in 2005 it was played in late end of August and later in 2006 it was played in the second half of June. It is part of the FedEx Cup and was played in the second half of just right about a week after the U.S Open Golf tournament ended in both 2007 and 2008.
During the first thirty years the traveler’s championship was played at the Wethersfield country club. Later in 1984 when the PGA tour purchased and then redesigned the Edgewood country club they moved the event to the new TPC of Connecticut located in Cromwell. Then later in 1991 the course they had the course redesigned to a greater extent which a completely new nine holes and then renamed the TPC at the River Highlands. The TPC property became the third property of the PGA Tour which was managed and owned by the championship. This later would grow to encompass 25 complete TPC clubs by 2007.
If you look at the history of the Travelers championship it has always been ruled by longer hitters for the past decade or so. People like Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, J.J. Henery and Stewart Cink had five victories over the span of around 8 years. Mahan was also the person that tied for second lace in both 2006 and then in 2008.
The purse of the 2006 Travelers Championship was set at $4.4 million and sponsored by Buick. The winner was to get $792,000. Then later from 2007 to 2009 the purse increased under the sponsorship of Travelers’ to $6 million which over $1,080,000 given to the champion.
The Travelers championship was initially founded in 1952 and was called the Insurance City Open. Later in 1967 the tournament was renamed to Greater Hartford Open a title that it retained right up to 2002. Its also interesting to note that from 1973-88 the Travelers champion also bore the name the entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr who was a frequent visitor and played at the pro-ams. One of their long time sponsors was electronics giant Canon, and Canon employees would be given a week long vacation to volunteer at the event.
Initially the Insurance city open as it was called before was founded by the Greater Hartford Jaycees which was as a means to raise funds in order to support their cause of philanthropy. The championship became very popular and many great names in the golfing industry as well as showbiz would be witnessed at this event.
