The first thing on the agenda as the MLB heads into its winter months is for the Chicago Cubs to finish the courting and signing of Theo Epstein as general manager. The second will be for the sage to evaluate the talent on the Cubs roster.

The major free agents on the infield are third baseman Aramis Ramirez and first baseman Carlos Pena. Ramirez wants to play for a contender, so I doubt he will have the patience to wait while Esptein reloads the roster. Pena is a one dimensional hitter who swings for the fences. I could easily see both players walking away without an offer.

Matt Garze put together a good season, but the rest of the bunch were phenomenally disappointing. The only bright spot is that the bullpen looks set.
