Houston Astros Tickets on Sale
The Houston Astros are all about three things over the course of the 2012 MLB schedule. First, they want to sport at least a competitive team with this roster of place holders. Second, they want the attractive pieces they have to play well enough for GM Jeff Luhnow to trade them for prospects. Third, they want to usher in a few prospects in a way that is both nurturing but challenging. That last goal is one of the most difficult tasks in the MLB and one that will push Manager Brad Mills to the limit.
In the meantime, first baseman Carlos Lee, starter Wandy Rodriguez, starter J.A. Happ, and closer Brett Myers need to have exceptional seasons. Lee needs to belt out 15 homeruns by the All Star break, Rodriguez needs an ERA lower than 3.50, Happ needs to prove he is the pitcher capable of the heights he reached with the Phillies, and Myers needs to avoid blowing whatever save opportunities he is given.
If these players can be moved then Jordan Lyles can return to the starting rotation after his dalliance with the spot last season, first baseman Jonathan Singleton can put in some time at the MLB level, and starter Jarred Cosart may get to put his stuff up to the MLB test. Cosart needs to fix his delivery to protect against possible injury. He has a great fastball and curveball and has added a decent changeup. It is assumed that his control problems will be fixed with his delivery, which is so slow Paul Konerko could steal on him.
Houston Astros History
The Houston Astros first took to the field as the Houston Colt .45s in 1962. Three seasons later, the franchise changed its name to mark the beginning of a new ownership and to celebrate the city’s relationship to the space program and the new stadium, the Astrodome. The name change and change in ownership may have been a particular savvy PR move in 1965, but the team’s fortunes remained the same, with the Astros finishing at the bottom of the NL standings.
The first true affair with success came at the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s. Beginning in 1979, the team had found a new owner after being sold to a financier. This signaled the beginning of a presence in the free agent market. Outfielder Jose Cruz and third baseman Enos Cabell became threats to steal; Joe Morgan returned to provide power hitting; and Joe Niekro , Nolan Ryan, J.R. Richard anchored the starting rotation. Houston Astros tickets were suddenly being sold for a playoff bound team in the NL West. The success quickly waned and the Astros would have to wait until Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell took up residency in the batting order before Houston would become a contender for an extended period.
That playoff era came from 1997 to 2005. The Houston Astros won the NL Central four times and entered the postseason as a wild card twice. The team won 102 games in 1998, but lost to the Padres in four games in the NLDS. The last hurrah, 2005, took the Astros to the World Series. There the Chicago White Sox swept the Astros. Jeff Bagwell left the game of baseball after the loss and Biggio would join him in retirement a year later. Despite a phenomenal starting rotation, the Astros magic had passed. TheSeats has the Houston Astros tickets to see a new generation of stars align to make a run at the postseason.
