The Kansas City Royals were an interesting ball club last season. They won 71 games but scored the 10th-most runs in the league but had the fourth worst team ERA. In 2012 the offense actually has the chance to be just as effective, while the offense may have imported just enough talent to push the baseball team to 81 wins or more and maybe a wild card bid for the 2012 postseason.

This is the season of first baseman Eric Hosmer, third baseman Mike Moustakas, left fielder Alex Gordon, and designated hitter Billy Butler. Hosmer and Moustakas are the young guns, Gordon is the late bloomer, and Butler is the deceptively quiet glue. Hosmer is a homerun hitter waiting to reach 30 if he can play nearly a full season and Moustakas is a prized possession manager Ned Yost hopes will adjust to big league hitting in his second MLB season. Gordon is never going to be George Brett, to the fans ire. But he is becoming a solid hitter capable of putting up a 20-plus spot on the homerun board and hit near .300 with a very respectable .376 OBP. Butler is another Gordon type, minus the 20 stolen bases.

With no real ace options on the table, GM Dayton Moore traded for Jonathan Sanchez. Though he never quite became the second option the Giants were after, the flame thrower could be the perfect bridge to take up mantle at the top of the rotation while the young arms develop in the minors. Bruce Chen and Luke Hochevar are career 3-4 guys in 2-3 roles and the rest of the rotation will be shared by more than just the likes of Danny Duffy and Felipe Paulino.

Kansas City Royals History

The Kansas City Royals joined the MLB in 1969 as an expansion team in the American League. They quickly became a threat in the AL West, taking first in the division from 1976 to 1978. The farm system had successfully developed a glut of stars, including Hall of Fame third baseman George Brett. Brett became a star in the early 1980s and Bret Saberhagen became an ace pitcher as the KC Royals went to the World Series in 1980 and Brett won the MVP.

Five years later Saberhagen had just won his second Cy Young and Brett carried the offense as the Royals reached the World Series for a second time. This time they won, taking the Cardinals out in seven games in the I-70 Series. General Manager John Schuerholz and owner Ewing Kauffman had built that team, but in a few years Schuerholz would leave and Kauffman would pass away. Despite developing players like David Cone, Carlos Beltran, Jermaine Dye, and Zack Greinke, the Royals have been unable to retain their services and truly compete in the AL Central.
