The Milwaukee Brewers are a club that scores with power and has a starting pitching staff that ranks amongst the best in the MLB. Left fielder Ryan Braun is the perennial leader in the batting order. Braun is hitting .309 with a .392 OBP and 23 homeruns. Braun has been an All Star since entering the league in 2007. He is well on his way to posting his highest homerun total of his career and could pot a career high in OBP in 2012. His partner in crime is Corey Hart. Hart has been moved to first place and he has responded by driving 16 homeruns out of the ball park and finding the lanes for 22 doubles. Right fielder Norichika Aoki is the only other decent contact hitter on the batting order. Aoki hit .298 with a .359 OBP.

The pitching staff is led by Zack Greinke and Yovani Gallardo. Greinke is 9-2 with 12 quality starts in 17 games with a 3.08 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Gallardo is 6-6, but he should have a much better record given his 14 quality starts and 3.39 ERA. Once Shawn Marcum returns from the DL the Brew Crew will have three terrific starters. If Michael Fiers is able to pitch as well as he has in his first 6 starts then Milwaukee will have four starters, good enough for any playoff team.

Milwaukee is currently below .500 and trails the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central. Coming back from fourth in this six-team division is going to be difficult. The Brewers have the starting pitching and hitters to make this run.

Milwaukee Brewers History

The Milwaukee Brewers played one season as the Seattle Pilots before moving to Milwaukee and becoming the Brewers. Like many expansion teams, the franchise struggled in its first decade (1969 to 1978). Eventually, the team had enough talent to compete.

Then they were in the AL East. The Brewers had two great pitchers in Rollie Fingers and Pete Vuckovich and two great hitters in Robin Yount and Cecil Cooper. Milwaukee reached the World Series in 1982 and took the St. Louis Cardinals to the seventh game before losing the series. Robin Yount remained with the team as the team star, but the Milwaukee Brewers were unable to return to the playoffs in the 1980s and early 1990s despite seasons with 90 or more wins. They were a part of a loaded AL East. The move to the AL Central in 1994 had come too late.

Milwaukee had begun rebuilding and was soon shipped to the National League after the addition of the Diamondbacks and Devil Rays in 1998. The Brewers struggled after the switch, but suddenly emerged as one of the promising young teams with Ryan Braun in left field and Prince Fielder at first base. These perennial All Stars have been the core of Brewers teams that have reached the postseason twice in the past four seasons.
