The Twins are stuck in last place in the American League Central in 2012, holding on to leads with a middling offense that must contend with a bottom of the barrel pitching staff consistently keeping things far too interesting for Manager Ron Gardenhire. The offense is supposed to be led by the M&M Boys, as they were a few years ago. Injuries and setbacks have minimized that duo. Catcher Joe Mauer has managed to keep up with his impressive hitting that has won him to batting titles, but he has failed to maintain the power he demonstrated the year before signing his nine-digit contract. Mauer is hitting .324 with a .414 OBP. Justin Morneau has not been the same since 2010. Morneau is hitting a troubling .239 with a .309 OBP and a mere 10 homeruns in 60 games.

Instead of Morneau, Mauer is receiving help from left fielder Josh Willingham. Willingham has never been a spectacular hitter for average, thus his .268 average is not troubling. He has excelled hitting the long ball, hitting 17 so far in 2012. Coupled with a .379 OBP, Willingham has been a great addition. Third baseman Trevor Plouffe is having a pretty good sophomore season. He is not posting a terrific batting average or OBP, but he does have 18 homeruns to his credit. Right fielder Ben Revere is new to the starting lineup. Revere is hitting .320 with a .346 OBP and arrives as a threat on the bases. He has 15 stolen bases in 19 attempts in just 178 at bats in 44 games. Mauer is the only one of the bunch heading to the All Star Game.

There is much to complain about with this staff. The Minnesota Twins have one starter worth talking about. Scott Diamond has 8 quality starts in 11 games with a 2.63 ERA and 1.21 WHIP and a 7-3 record. The young southpaw is proving his lack of strikeouts is no need to worry.

Minnesota Twins History

The Minnesota Twins have only been playing baseball in Minneapolis since 1961. Before 1961, they had been based in Washington D.C. and gone by the Nationals or the Senators. Those seasons in the nation's capital featured a couple good years, including a World Series win in 1924, but were mostly an experience so frustrating many wondered whether the city were simply cursed when it came to the national pastime.

The move west to Minnesota paid dividends very early. They played and lost in the 1965 World Series and lost in the ALCS to the Orioles in 1969 and 1970. The Twins spent the next 15 seasons in the middle of the pack before busting out with the franchise's second World Series win in 1987. Position players Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrbek and pitchers Frank Viola, Bert Blyleven, Jeff Reardon, and Jack Morris led the team to a win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Four years later, much of the same roster returned to beat the Atlanta Braves.

In the seasons since, the Minnesota Twins have not returned to the World Series, but they have been a constant contender in the AL Central, taking the division six times in the first decade of the 21st century. TheSeats has the Minnesota Twins ticket to Target Field to see Mauer and Morneau as they take this franchise back to the postseason and, perhaps, the World Series.
