The Cardinals were established in the American Association in 1882, but were called the St. Louis Browns. In 1892, they joined the National League and have been called the Cardinals since 1900. They started playing in Busch Stadium in 2006; they became the 1st team to win the World Series in their first season in a new ballpark since 1923. They have a powerful rivalry with the Chicago Cubs that started in 1885. St. Louis played in the early version of the World Series; the 1st 2 times were against the Chicago White Stockings (who became the Chicago Cubs). In 1885, the series ended in disagreement, but the Cardinals clearly won the 1886 series. Thus began a St. Louis-Chicago rivalry that goes on to this day. In 1920, Sam Breadon bought the team and named Branch Rickey general manager; Rickey moved the team to Sportsman’s Park to become tenants of their AL rivals, the St. Louis Browns. The team, which was nicknames the Gashouse Gang due to their shabby appearance and rough strategies, won the pennant and World Series against the Detroit Tigers.
