Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, a professional baseball team, are based in Anaheim, CA and are in the MLB’s American League West Division. Their name comes from Los Angeles, their original home city. Many fans informally call them “the Halos,” “the Wings,” “the Seraphs,” and “the Angelitos.” They have played in Angels Stadium of Anaheim since 1966. They were founded as an expansion team in 1961. Then the Los Angeles Angels, they played in LA’s Wrigley Field (not to be confused with Chicago’s Wrigley Field).

They have gone through quite a few name changes: the 1st was in 1965 to the California Angels to stress their status as the only AL team in California; in 1997, they became the Anaheim Angels after the Walt Disney Co. took control and made renovations to Angel Stadium on the condition the word “Anaheim” would be in both the stadium and team names; and in 2005, new owner Arte Moreno wanted to change the name back to the original hoping to tap into the LA media market better, but the agreement with Anaheim still demanded they have “Anaheim” in the name, thus they became the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The change was highly disputed by the city of Anaheim and the LA Dodgers, who wanted complete possession of the title, “Los Angeles.” After a legal battle, the team got to keep the name, but “Los Angeles” is not on any uniforms, merchandise, promotional materials or even the Angel Stadium scoreboard; instead of the abbreviation “LAA,” the halo logo is used. The St. Louis Rams previously played in Anaheim and were called the Los Angeles Rams, though.

The Angels moved to Doger Stadium in 1962 under the terms of their agreement with O'Malley. Angel fans were able to enjoy the heroics of fireballer Nolan Ryan during the 1970s. In 1979 the Angels won their first American League West Division championship and in 1982 postseason they nearly reached the World Series. In 1996 Disney effectively took control of the Angels, but later, on May 15, 2003, Disney sold the Angels to Angels Baseball, L.P. The Anaheim Stadium was renamed to Edison International Field of Anaheim in 1997,after the negotiations between the Angels and the city of Anaheim for renovation of ended with an agreement to rehabilitate and downsize the facility into a baseball-only stadium. Their home ballpark was Milwaukee County Stadium (1970–2000) and the Miller Park, Milwaukee is from 2001 to present.
