Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays, a professional baseball team based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, are members of the MLB’s American League East Division. Their name came from the bird of the same name; their nickname is “the Jays” and is featured on their logo and the front of their home uniform. The team was founded in Toronto in 1977 as an expansion team. They originally played at Exhibition Stadium, but moved to the SkyDome in 1989. The SkyDome was bought in 2004 by Rogers Communications and renamed the Rogers Centre. They are the 1st and only team outside the US to win a World Series and the first to win one in Canada. Currently, the Jays are the only MLB team outside the US; the Montreal Expos moved to Washington, D.C. after the 2004 season and became the Washington Nationals. In 1993, they won the World Series on Canadian soil, which was the only time it was won outside the US. Their mascot is a personified blue jay named Ace; the team motto is, “It’s always game time; and their logo is a blue jay’s head coming out of a J.

The team was initially owned by Labatt Breweries, Imperial Trust and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (the latter two were minority owners). Former Ontario Premier, John Robarts, who was a member of the team’s board of directors, was talking about a morning routine and mentioned seeing a blue jay. Another board member thought it was an interesting name and it was the very first time the words were mentioned. Most likely, the team would have worn blue, anyway, because it was the traditional color since the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts chose it as their primary color in 1873.

The Toronto Blue Jays are a professional baseball team founded in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1977. They are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's American League. Their name comes from the bird with the same name and their nickname is "the Jays", which is also their logo. The teams mascot is Ace, an anthropomorphized blue jay. On April 7, 1977 the Blue Jays played their first game against the Chicago White Sox. The Jays compiled their first winning record in 1983, 89-73, finishing in fourth place, 9 games behind the eventual World Series champions, the Baltimore Orioles. In the middle of the 1989 season, the Blue Jays' new retractable roofed home, SkyDome, was opened. In 1991, the Blue Jays became the first Major League club ever to draw over four million fans in one season. In May 2003 there was a spectacular turnaround which helped the team move to just few games behind the leading Boston Red Sox and the team performance slowly returned to reality. They also announced that a new logo and new uniforms would be used as of January 1, 2004. The Blue Jays played their longest game in franchise history on July 28, 2005, an 18-inning marathon against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Rogers Centre and won 2-1, after nearly five hours of play.
