Denver Nuggets 2008 Outlook

The Denver Nuggets played down to the wire to make the playoffs in the Western Conference in 2007-08. The team finished 50-32 for the eighth seed in the playoffs and second place in the Northwest standings. The Nuggets were led all season long by an explosive offense that saw Allen Iverson finish third in the NBA with 26.4 points a game, but also finish with 7.1 assists. Iverson and Carmelo Anthony provided the bulk of the offense, and J.R. Smith and Linas Kleiza came off the bench to keep the offense rolling when the stars were on the bench. The team averaged a total of 110 points a game, but they also gave up 107. The high scoring Nuggets made every game exciting and hope to carry that energy deep into the playoffs and into seasons to come.

Alex English and Kiki Vandeweghe and the rest of the Nuggets led the league in scoring for years. The highest scoring game in NBA history pitted the Nuggets against the Pistons in 1983. The game went into three overtimes and Detroit won 186-184. The scoring machine went far in the playoffs throughout the ‘80s, but the lack of defense was the Nuggets’ ultimate demise.

Nuggets Team History

The Denver Nuggets were one of the charter franchises of the ABA. When the NBA and the ABA merged in 1976, the Nuggets were one of the four teams to cross over to the NBA. The Nuggets were an instant contender, regularly reaching the Division Semifinals in their years in the ABA.

The NBA years have been kind the Nuggets. The Nuggets started out carrying on the tradition of deep playoff runs. David Thompson, Dan Issel, and Bobby Jones brought the high scoring team into playoff contention with a young Larry Brown as its coach. Browns exit as coach began a brief period of struggle for the Nuggets, but Doug Moe’s arrival in 1981 came with the adoption of a completely offensive game.

The end of the ‘80s signaled the end of an era for the Nuggets and the NBA, and as the games became more intense on defense the Nuggets winning ways began to dwindle. The club drafted Dikembe Mutombo in 1992 to end the defensive woes. Mutombo, LaPhons Ellis, Bryant Stith, and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf put together a winning record in the 1993-94 season. The Nuggest shocked the number one seed Seattle Supersonics in the first round, but lost the conference finals to the Utah Jazz.

The team began to decline once again, as the Nuggets traded Mutombo in 1996 and the team almost broke the record for fewest wins in a season in the 1997-98 season. The club finally began turning their fortunes around in 2003 when they drafted Carmelo Anthony. The young forward spurred the team onto four straight playoff appearances, and four straight first round exits.

The Nuggets’ attempt to find a running mate for Anthony ended in 2006 when they traded for prolific scorer Allen Iverson. The two have recreated the offensive machine of the ‘80s with their penetration and demand for defensive attention. The two have also recreated the lack of defense that was the downfall for the Nuggets of the same era.
