So how is Alex Smith a weapon? Certainly his first six seasons in the NFL were forgettable at best and embarrassing at worst. Yes, he had to endure perennial changes at offensive coordinator, but surely his inability to produce means he is destined to be a failure, right? Nope, Alex Smith demonstrated he still has the talent in his fourth quarter battle with Drew Brees in the 35-32 divisional barn burner with the Saints. As much as fans would like to believe Smith has turned the corner is going “Eli Manning” in 2012, he still has to play the actual Eli Manning and the Giants defense.
Luckily the San Francisco 49ers boast an even stingier defense, allowing the second fewest points over the course of the regular season. For the 49ers to advance in the 2012 edition of the NFL playoffs, the defense needs to stifle the Giants fifth-best passing game and Frank Gore needs to run over the now-healthy Giants defensive line.
San Francisco 49ers History
For the longest time, the San Francisco 49ers franchise was a non-factor. They first took the field in 1946 and did not become a recognizable power until the 1980s. The purchase of the team by Edward J. DeBartolo Jr., the arrival of head coach Bill Walsh, the adoption of the West Coast offense, and the selection of Joe Montana changed the direction of the franchise.
Suddenly, 49ers tickets were on sale for a team that went on to win five Super Bowls and 12 division titles from 1981 to 1997. Montana made tight end Dwight Clark a fixture in NFL films with “The Catch”, enjoyed the company of wide receivers Jerry Rice and John Taylor, and had running support from Roger Craig. Eventually Montana began to break down, but the 49ers had a Hall of Fame quarterback in waiting in Steve Young. The lefty Mormon stepped and the 49ers continued its dominance in the 1990s without as much as a hiccup. San Francisco has been looking for its quarterback since Young gave way to Jeff Garcia, a serviceable overachiever.
