Phoenix Coyotes Tickets for Sale

The biggest blow to the Phoenix Coyotes this offseason is the departure of goaltending great Ilya Bryzgalov. His incredible play in the net will not be replaced, but the hope is that additions Mike Smith and Curtis McEkhinney or Jason LaBarbera will be able to put up respectable numbers. Of course, the Coyotes hope the resigning of breakout defenseman Keith Yandle, a cast of veteran defensemen, and the signing of three bruising forwards is enough to keep the net safe.

Those three forwards are Boyd Gordon, Raffi Torres, and Kyle Chipcura. Of course, this team is full of veterans, which is why Yandle created such a buzz. The Coyotes have some young blood to count on, and they are hoping defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Mikkel BBoedker, and Kyle Turris can be the next breakout stars.

Phoenix Coyotes History

The Phoenix Coyotes have been in Arizona since the 1996-97 NHL season, but the franchise dates back to the inaugural 1971-1972 WHL season when they were the Winnipeg Jets. The hockey team dominated the upstart league, winning three championships before the WHL and NHL merged in 1979. The team suffered through the merger, as the NHL teams reclaimed the majority of the Jets roster.

This team, stripped of its star players, struggled through the first couple of seasons and set the league record for the worst season in its history. The 1980-81 Jets went 9-57-14 for a dismal 32 points. Winnipeg came roaring back following the dreadful season, making the NHL playoffs 11 of the next 15 seasons. Plagued by the financial constraints of playing in the smallest market in the league, the franchise eventually found new ownership and landed in Phoenix as the Coyotes.

Since arriving in Phoenix the team has often attracted star veterans, like Jeremy Roenick and Brett Hull. The one home grown prospect the team will forever remember will be goalie Nikolai Khabibulin. For all the hall of fame veterans the Coyotes have signed, the season schedule has typically ended long before the Stanley Cup. This could change soon, as the franchise is busy developing young talent as the new generation of stars.
