After the death of Seymour Knox in May 22, 1996 his brother Northrop sold the team to John Rigas who was also owner of Adelphia Communications.

In June 10, of 2008 the Buffalo Sabres tickets announced their new affiliate for the American Hockey League in the beginning of the 2008-09 seasons. The new affiliates were the Portland, Maine team called the Portland Pirates. This announcement ended the official 29 year affiliation they had with the Rochester Americans. Many people suspected that the Buffalo Sabres tickets would make such an announcement but many didn’t believe that such a big thing could happen.
