The Phoenix Coyotes are an NHL team based in Glendale, AZ, which is just outside of Phoenix, and are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. Their home games are played in the Jobing.com Arena. The team was established in 1972 and was then called the Winnipeg Jets and was part of the World Hockey Association; they joined the NHL in 1979 and moved to Phoenix in 1996. They started their NHL career by losing their 1st NHL game to the Pittsburgh Penguins. They finished the 1980/81 season with the worst recordand drafted Dale Hawerchuck. They played their home games at the US Airways Center, which was then called the America West Arena, for 7 years. Jobing.com Arena, their present home arena, was completed in 2003.
In their first year, the Coyotes had some established players, like Jeremy Roenick from the Chicago Blackhawks, Keith Tkachuk and Rick Tocchet. In order for them to create a more complete team, a lot of new, young players were given the chance to play for them, like Shane Doan, Nikolai Khabibulin and Oleg Tverdovsky. After many unsuccessful games, the Coyotes attempted to upgrade their team for the 2007/08 season; they chose Peter Mueller, Martin Hanzal, Radim Vrbata, Alex Auld, David Aebischer and Mikael Tellqvist. Even though they had star players, they couldn’t make the playoffs; the Coyotes haven’t been able to get any title to date.
