The Pittsburgh Penguins are an NHL team based in Pittsburgh, PA and are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. They were established in 1967 in Pittsburgh. They play their home games at Mellon Arena; their owners are Canadian Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. The team captain is Canadian Sidney Crosby. The team has been plagued by financial issues, forcing the ownership groups to sell the team, wven if it meant relocation; in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, the team’s ownership tried to find alternatives that could get them a return on their investment.
The fans and even local government officials were successful in getting the team’s ownership to keep the team in Pittsburgh by showing them that the city and its region were more than capable of meeting the needs of a modern NHL team. In a joint announcement made by Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Chief Dan Onorato, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Mario Lemieux of the Penguins’ ownership group said an agreement was made between the parties on March 13, 2007: a new state-of-the-art multipurpose arena would be built. The agreement will allow Pittsburgh to keep the Penguins for the next 30 years. After the announcement, the Lemieux ownership group said they no longer want to sell the team. The new arena is anticipated to open for the 2010/11 season.
