Tampa Bay Lightning Tickets for Sale

The Tampa Bay Lightning most important move may have been retaining the skills of Steven Stamkos. Center Stamkos has scored the most goals combined in the last two seasons in the NHL. Unfortunately, Yzerman could not keep everyone. He was able to resign goalie Dwayne Roloson, forward Teddy Purcell, defenseman Eric Brewer, and defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron. He had to let the rest of the league tear goalie Mike Smith, forward Simon Gagne, forward Sean Bergenheim, and defenseman Randy Jones from his grip.

Yet, this team has done a commendable job filling those gaps left by the departed. Goalie Mathieu Garon replaces Smith, right wing Michel Ouellet has to try to replace Gagne, defenseman Richard Petiot replaces Jones, and a handful of other replacements could prove to be very valuable as the season schedule progresses. The Lightning may actually match last season's performance if not improve upon that Stanley Cup run.

Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning were the first NHL team to make Florida its home, playing its first game in the 1992-1993 season. That first decade yielded little success, with just one playoffs appearance. The 21st century has been far more eventful. The Lightning have finished first in the Southeast Division twice and won a Stanley Cup.

That Stanley cup came in 2004. The Lightning finished with 106 points and easily advanced in the first two rounds, beating the Islanders in five games in the Conference Quarterfinals and sweeping the Canadiens in the Conference Semifinals. The next two rounds proved far more difficult. In the conference finals the Flyers took the Lightning to Game 7 and in the Stanley Cup the Flames again drew out the series until the last game.

Forwards Martin St. Louis led the team in scoring with 94 points with plenty of help from Corey Stillman (80 points), Brad Richards (79 points), and Vincent Lecavalier (66 points). Dan Boyle proved an excellent transition defenseman, scoring 39 points, and Pavel Kubina proved a scoring threat from the blue line with 17 goals. Nikolai Khabibulin dominated in goal, allowing 2.33 GAA.
