The Virginia Cavaliers football team represents the University of Virginia in the NCAA Division I. Thomas Jefferson founded the public research university and it was established in the year 1819. It is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. The university's athletic program competes in the NCAA division I. The athletic teams are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference since the year 1953.
The Virginia Cavaliers football team competes in the NCAA Division I- FBS and also in the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team was founded in the year 1888. The university's football team joined its first league, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in the year 1894. The team came to be known as the Virginia Cavaliers around 1923 and the first Cavaliers were led by Earle "Greasy" Neale. The Virginia Cavaliers football team is part of the South's Oldest Rivalry with UNC. Al Groh currently coaches the team. He had joined the team on December 30, 2000. He was the former head coach of the New York Jets. Groh has won the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2002 and in 2007.
Scott Stadium is home to the Virginia Cavaliers football team. It was inaugurated in the year 1931. The stadium can seat up to 61,500 spectators. It has also played host to significant concerts by the Rolling Stones and the Dave Matthews Band. It has hosted the Division I NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship in 1977 and 1982.
