The university's eighteen sports teams comprise ten men's and eight women's programs. They compete in the NCAA Division I and they are also a member of the Atlantic coast Conference. The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a public university that is located in Blacksburg, Virginia. It was established in the year 1872.
The university football team competes in the NCAA Division I- FBS. The team flagged off in the intercollegiate football on October 21, 1892. The Hokies have won two Atlantic Coast Conference championships and three Big East conference championships in their history. They have been participating in the post-season college football game called bowl game since the year 1993 and they have the fourth-longest bowl game streak in the country. Frank Beamer has been the head coach of the team for the past twenty years. He had joined the team in the year 1987. Beamer had won the Big East Coach of the Year awards in 1995, 1996 and 1999. In 1999, he was honored as the National Coach of the Year.
The Virginia Tech Hokies football team plays its home games at the Lane Stadium that was inaugurated in 1965. In 2005, the stadium was recognized as the best home field advantage in the country by Rivals.com and remains at the second position on the “Top Ten Scariest Places To Play”, rated by espn.com. It has a seating capacity for 66,233 spectators.
