A Chorus Line shows an internal play as Broadway dancers audition for spots on a chorus line to play in a Broadway show. The author of the original story was Nicholas Dante and James Kirkwood, Jr, with lyrics by Edward Kleban and composition by Marvin Hamlish.
The play contains 19 characters on a blank stage in a Broadway theatre during the audition for the musical. Each personality explored by the dancers is also explained by the choreographer who briefly describes the events and decisions that are being fulfilled by the dancers.
The production was originally directed, produced, and choreographed by Michael Bennett, who brought the show to 12 Tony Awards nominations and huge box office showings. The group won 9 of those Tony awards and the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The show ran for 6,137 shows, eventually becoming the fourth in the world for longest running show and the longest running musical originally produced the United States. The show was revived on Broadway in 2006 and now travels across the United States and the world today. The current production has since received two Tony's for Revival and Featured Role. With the contract at a compromise, Both Michael Bennett, his dancers, and the current show reached a fair agreement on how the show should be produced.
