Brighton Beach Memoirs Tickets
Brighton Beach Memoirs is more than just another play by Neil Simon, it is more than simply the first play of the Eugene Trilogy, and it is more than the a chance to catch a glimpse of the fame playwright’s childhood. Brighton Beach Memoirs is widely regarded as Simon’s breakthrough work, one in which he successfully melded comedy and tragedy.
Before Brighton Beach Memoirs he was known for being very good at writing either a very good comedy or a very good drama. With Brighton Beach he took a semi-autobiographical story and made the jump that helped make him a legend in the theater world.
The play tells the story of the Jeromes, a working class family in Brooklyn, over the course of a few days with particular attention paid to Eugene Jerome’s point of view. Eugene is the only character that is allowed to break the fourth wall and speak directly to the audience, which allows him to add a few hilarious quips and fill the audience in on the intricacies of the family.
As the family deals with an overworked patriarch who suffers a heart attack, a eldest son that must live up to financial responsibilities for the good of his family, the dreams of girl being weighed against the importance of an education, and the relationship between two sisters as they deal with problems from their childhood in addition to their kids, Eugene faces the prospect of growing up.
