This latest entry onto her resume is a story set in the countryside outside New York during Victorian times. The work may appear to be a sex-farce, and assuredly there are many references to sex and the confusion between the sexes, but the story goes deeper, delving into the true troubles that come from disconnect of understanding between the two sexes.

The play focuses on the worlds of two women, Sabrina Daldry and Catherine Givings. Sabrina Daldry is seeing Catherine’s husband, a gynecologist, for hysteria. Remarkably, in these days the cure for such hysteria or displacement from live in women and some men is what equates to a vibrator in modern times and the cure is an orgasm. Daldry happily accepts the treatment and is overjoyed to schedule another appointment.

Catherine is having issues with her husband after her milk has been deemed insufficient for their recently born child. A wet nurse is brought in, leaving Catherine frustrated and bored. In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play) is more than a sex farce because of her character. She wants more than the organism she is able to achieve with the vibrator. She wants to rekindle that emotional relationship with her husband. In the end, a minor variation of a sexual position is able to give both Catherine Giving and Dr. Giving the connection that had been drifting away.

In the Next Room (or the vibrator play) is truly a comedy, but a comedy with a heart and hope.
