Mary Poppins is an award-winning Broadway musical based on the similarly-titled children’s books and Disney film. It debuted at the New Amsterdam Theatre in November 2006. Under the direction of Richard Eyre, the show leaves lasting imprints on audiences’ minds and hearts. Everything has been done perfectly, from the stage set-up to the design of the costumes. Mary Poppins was originally made into a film in 1964 of the same name and starred Julie Andrews. Later, Julian Fellow wrote a book of the same name. Apart from this, the stage version has special effects that do not take away from the original theme.
This Broadway musical is one of the more popular plays and has become a fan favorite. The story is about the challenges every family faces when it comes to raising children. The Banks family is introduced and the audience meets the two children, Jane and Michael, who have been taught the basics of being good, well-mannered children. Mary Poppins’ entry into the family is of great significance as her arrival means the lives of the Banks family change for the better. She shows the children that it is alright to act like children; that’s what they’re supposed to do. But when they start fighting, she makes the toys in the nursery come to life and berate them in the song, “Temper Temper.” She also shows Mr. and Mrs. Banks that it really is fine to let the children be themselves. She takes the children on grand adventures and introduces everyone to her friend, Bert, who is a chimney sweep. He helps Michael to get dirty and not be afraid of it. Mary Poppins takes the children to the bank, where their father works, unbeknownst to he and his wife. They watch the events unfold there.
Mr. and Mrs. Banks have two very different outlooks on life. Mr. Banks works all the time and doesn’t want to risk offending anyone, especially his bosses. Mrs. Banks thinks the children should be children, but need to not act up. She is also just a little flighty. Because of this, there is a lot of talk between them. “Being Mrs. Banks” is the song the wife sings throughout the play, in which she is trying to convey her love for her husband. Wonderful direction and amazing acting are the elements that have led to the show reaching a point marking the place of champions.
The musical is the joint effort of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh Productions. The cast includes an extremely talented team: Bob Crowley, the designer, Matthew Bourne, choreographer and co-director and George Stiles, composer/ lyricist.
