oleanna Tickets
Oleanna is the story of a professor, John, on the cusp of tenure and a student, Carol, coming to him for help after class. This a classic David Mamet play with terse dialogue and an open struggle for power between the two characters. The story takes place within the confines of John’s office and the power struggle is portrayed through the subtle meaning of words, glances, and inflections.
Carol is a student who is having a difficult time in John’s class. She comes to him for aid as she worries that her grade will slip far below what is satisfactory. The play explores the interaction over three acts as John is distracted by the security his tenure would bring and his own qualms with the teacher-student relationship. He inadequately tries to explain what she fails to understand, talking at her and over her head, leaving her confused and frustrated.
Oleanna turns the professor’s life upside down as his actions and his failures lead down a path in which Carol has turned on him, speaking at him, threatening his failure and playing on his insecurities. David Mamet explores the world of higher learning, political correctness, and sexual harassment, leaving much up to interpretation by the audience in this terse drama.
