Phantom of the Opera History

The Andrew Lloyd Webber show has banked over $5.1 billion since it first opened on the West End in 1986. This incredible success all began because the famed composer of hits like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Evita, and Cats had a yearning to create a romantic piece. While talking with Cameron Mackintosh, a producer he had worked with in the past, he was directed to a story that had been adapted for film twice and a stage musical once before, the Phantom of the Opera.

Lloyd Webber turned to the source material the Phantom of the Opera book written by Gaston Leroux. His search for a lyricist led him to Jim Steinman, Alan Jay Lerner, and Richard Stilgoe before giving unknown Charles Hart a chance. Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the music and Maria Bjornson designed the set and more than 200 costumes. Lloyd Webber tapped another former contact, Hal Prince, to direct.

The show debuted at Her Majesty's Theatre on the West End with previews on September 27, 1986 and officially opening on October 9, 1986. Michael Crawford starred as the Phantom, Sarah Brightman as Christine, and Steve Barton as Raoul. Two years later, the Phantom went stateside to play at the Majestic Theatre with previews beginning on January 9, 1988 and an official opening on January 26, 1988. Since then Phantom tickets have sold in over 145 cities and 27 countries.

Phantom of the Opera Synopsis

The Phantom of the Opera begins with the aftermath, an auction in 1911, in which Raoul purchases a music box. The musical then goes back to 1881 as the Phantom begins haunting the latest production at the Paris Opera. There the Phantom takes to a chorus girl, Christine. He has a rival love interest though, Raoul, her childhood friend.

The Phantom manipulates and terrorizes until Christine has replaced Carlotta as the resident soprano prima donna. It all comes down to a showdown in the Phantom's lair.
