The story of Ragtime is one of a multi-racial, multi-ethnic group (an upper class Protestant family, an African-American musical family, and an Eastern European Jewish immigrant family). The groups all roll with the times and the music, each trying to survive amidst their own conflicts, which are tied to the major historical personalities of the period.
The adaptation was undertaken by Terrence McNally (book), Lynn Ahrens (lyrics), and Stephen Flaherty (music). The musical jumps between the music of the time beautifully and was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, winning four.
