Wicked the Musical History
This sensation began as a novel written by Gregory Maguire. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West found its way into the hands of composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz one summer vacation in the 1990s. By 1998, Schwartz had met Maguire and Schwartz had convinced the author and tried to convince him to release the rights for a stage adaptation. However, Maguire had already released the rights to the book to Universal Studios for a motion picture. After much pleading, Schwartz had the rights to the book.
Wicked the book had to be adopted for the stage. Schwartz contacted Winnie Holzman to have her adapt the book. The source material dealt with political, social, and ethical issues, and, while Schwartz wanted to keep those elements, he had to soften the tone to make the musical palatable for a big budget musical audience. Next, the producers began filling out the cast through readings. Notably, Kristin Chenoweth read for Galinda, a role she would originate on Broadway. The cast rounded out with Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, Joel Gray as the Wonderful Wizards of Oz, Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible, Michelle Federer as Nessarose, Christopher Fitzgerald as Boq, and William Youmans as Doctor Dillamond.
Wicked the Musical had a try out at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco in summer 2003 to mixed reviews. After a little retooling, Wicked debuted on Broadway on October 30, 2003.
