The Fillmore is located in San Francisco, California. It is a famous venue for popular contemporary music in San Francisco.
Emma Gates Butler as a dance hall founded the Fillmore in 1912. The dance hall maintained its tradition till the 1940s. During the 1950s, the Fillmore had experienced the performances by some of the biggest names in black music. In the 1960s, the venue became the site for musical acts like, The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band, Pink Floyd, Cream, King Crimson, The Nice, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Doobie Brothers and many more.
The Fillmore was converted into a nightclub, The Elite Club in the 1970s. Some of the punk bands that performed at the club were Black Flag, Bad Brains, Flipper, The Dead Kennedys, TSOL, Gang of Four, and Public Image Ltd. On April 27, 1994, the Fillmore was re-opened with the performances like, the Smashing Pumpkins, Ry Cooder & David Lindley and the American Music Club. Some other previous line ups at the Fillmore included the Primus, Chris Isaak, the Blues Traveler and Soul Hat, Jefferson Starship, Huey Lewis and the News, the Steel Pole Bathtub and SF Seals, the Mother Hips, the Thinking Fellers Union Local #282, the Merry Pranksters with music by Jambay, the Twister - A Ritual Reality, the Counting Crows, Michelle Shocked, Queen Latifah and Solsonics, the Gin Blossoms, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Marshall Crenshaw and the list goes on.
