The Verizon Center is a sports and entertainment arena located in Washington, D.C., USA. Formerly known as the MCI Center, it was inaugurated on December 2, 1997. The Verizon Center is home to the Washington Capitals of the NHL, the Washington Wizards of the NBA, the Georgetown University men's basketball team and the Washington Mystics of the WNBA. The Washington Sports and Entertainment owns and operates the arena.
The Verizon Center has been a host to various events such as the1998 Stanley Cup Finals, the World Championship Wrestling, the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, the World Wrestling Entertainment, the NBA All-Star Game, the WNBA All-Star Game, the ISU World Figure Skating Championships, the Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball tournament and the BB&T Classic Basketball Tournament. It has also been a host to performances by Madonna, Shakira, Van Helen, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and the Spice Girls.
The Verizon Center has a total seating capacity of around 20,173 people. The year 2008 will witness performances by Alicia Keys, Pearl Jam, George Michael and Neil Diamond. It will also host games between the Washington Mystics and various other teams, besides the WWE.
