The Winter Garden Theatre is located between the 50th and 51st streets in midtown Manhattan. It is a famous Broadway theatre in the United States. The Shubert Organization was the earlier owner of the theatre.
William Kissam Vanderbilt built the Winter Garden Theatre as the American Horse Exchange in the year 1896. It was in the year 1911, when the Winter Garden was converted into a theatre. Since then, the venue has been home to revues and musicals. The theatre was inaugurated on March 10, 1911 with the La Belle Paree, a musical by Jerome Kern. 'The Passing Show', 'Peter Pan', 'The Unsinkable Molly Brown', 'Funny Girl', 'Mame', 'Gypsy', 'Pacific Overtures', 'Gilda Radner — Live from New York', '42nd Street', 'Cats', 'Mamma Mia' were some of the notable musicals played at the Winter Garden Theatre.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 'Cats', the second longest running show in Broadway history, was the longest tenant of the theatre. The musical was opened at the theatre on October 7, 1982 and ran until 2000. During its eighteen years, it showcased 7,485 shows. The Winter Garden Theatre featured artists like Fanny Brice, Bob Hope, Eve Arden, Gypsy Rose Lee, Josephine Baker, Bobby Clark, Gypsy Rose and Willie Howard.
